Setup Information for Mac OS X

CPIT-Wifi is a wireless network available to students and staff with non-CPIT owned equipment. Anyone can connect but to get access to services like the internet you will need to have a current CPIT username and password.

Step 1:

Set up a new location for your laptop to be used at CPIT.

  1. Open up System Preferences

  2. Select the Network preference pane

  3. Click on the Locations popdown button and Select the Edit Locations

  4. Click on Automatic and then select Duplicate Location from the settings button. Then rename the duplicate copy to CPIT. Click Done.

Step 2:

Set up your wireless connection for your laptop to be used at CPIT.

  1. Click on the Airport option in the side pane. Making sure it is turned on.

  2. Click on the Network Name popdown button and select "CPIT-Wifi"

  3. Enter the password - noproblemo - into the Password dialogue box. Click OK.

  4. Click on the Advanced... button

  5. For Mac OS X V10.6 - Snow Leopard.

    Click on the Proxies tab and select ""Automatic Proxy Configuration" and enter "http://wpad.cpit.ac.nz/skymac.pac" in the URL field."


    Mac OS X V10.6 - Snow Leopard 
  6. For Mac OS X V10.5 - Leopard.

    Click on the Proxies tab and select "Configure Proxies Using a PAC file"

    In the PAC File URL box type: http://wpad.cpit.ac.nz/skymac.pac click on OK

  7. Click on Apply

Remember to change your location back to Automatic when you get home.

Accessing File Systems

Accessing the File Systems (eg your home directory (G Drive) can be done in two ways:

Steps for connecting directly (Mac OS X):

  1. Use the path builder to get the server name.
  2. Using Finder Select Go
  3. Select Connect to Server
  4. Enter: smb://<server-name>.cpit.ac.nz
    <server-name> will be either student-home-1, student-home-2 or venda which was determined in step 1
  5. Click on the authenticate button and login in using your CPIT username and password.
  6. Follow the path on screen to locate your home folder

Pools Directory (P Drive)

  1. Use the path builder to get the server name.
  2. Using Finder Select Go
  3. Select Connect to Server
  4. Enter: smb://pools_server.cpit.ac.nz
  5. Click on the authenticate button and login in using your CPIT username and password.
  6. Follow the path on screen to locate your home folder.

Macintosh Environment

  1. Select Go and then Connect To Server
  2. Enter: Rowlf.
  3. Select the Drive letter you wish to use for this connection
  4. Enter your network username and password when prompted.
  5. Select your username to connect to your file area or the folder you wish to connect to.

Printing

Printing is done through a system called iPrint. This requires a small program to be installed on your Mac. Install the client and access printers.
