Teacher Training

CPIT's programmes of study in English Language Teaching are:

Diploma in Tertiary Learning and Teaching
Level: 6 - This applied programme is designed for those working within tertiary organisations. You will identify and reflect on appropriate principles and practices of tertiary learning and teaching, and develop the skills to design, deliver, assess and evaluate tertiary education in a New Zealand/Aotearoa cultural context. Level 5 courses are delivered part time over one term using a blended delivery model of face-to-face teaching in 2-3 day blocks, ˝ day workshops and on-line Moodle support. Level 6 courses are offered flexibility in a supported delivery approach with group workshops supported by on-line and individual conferencing and project work.

Graduate Certificate in English Language Teaching
Level: 7 - Both the theoretical knowledge and the practical skills required of teachers of adult English language learners are incorporated into this programme. The programme consists of one compulsory course: CELT500: Principles and Practices of English Language Teaching to Adults. On successful completion of this programme you will be awarded the Cambridge CELTA as an integral part of the Graduate Certificate. The electives cover areas such as linguistics, psychology of second language learning, development and use of teaching resources and assessment principles and practice.

Principles and Practice of English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA stand alone course)
Level: 5 - This course enables you to develop an understanding of the principles and practice of effective English Language teaching to adults, as well as a range of skills for teaching English to adult learners.

Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages
Level: 5 - To provide trainees from a non-English speaking background with the principles of effective English Language teaching to adults, and to provide them with a range of practical skills and resources for teaching English to adult learners.

Teacher Training Certificate - Upper Intermediate

This 5-week full time course focuses on the principles of Communicative Language Teaching and involves practical teaching sessions. After the course, students may take the Cambridge Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) at extra cost. This course is for students from a non-English speaking background. High level students may be able to continue on to do the CELTA.

What will I study?

The CPIT English Language Teaching programmes will help develop your awareness of language and your knowledge of the description of English. You will also learn the principles and practices of English language testing and assessment and effective teaching to adult learners of English.

Where will I study?

CPIT’s School of English is located at the main city campus in Madras St. English students have access to the Language Self Access Centre in the CPIT library where listening booths, computers, video and DVD players are provided to assist students with their language learning. Students also have access to an extensive range of campus facilities including:
