The programme includes compulsory courses in Māori language, linguistics, cultural studies and a supervised research project at Level 7.
In addition to these core subjects, electives are offered in the following vocational areas:
A maximum of 100 elective credits from any degree programme at CPIT or other New Zealand polytechnic or university may also be included.
If you do not meet the entry criteria as set out below but are still interested in this area of study, you may wish to consider one of the following options: Te Hāpara (Level 5 Diploma which gives entry to Year 2 of the degree), Te Atatū (Level 6 Diploma, with direct entry to Year 3 of the degree) or one of the foundation certificates, Te Ata Hōu or Te Haeata.
Graduates from this programme will have a high level of proficiency in spoken and written Māori, as well as the academic skills required for higher level study. You will have an understanding of the nature of culture and of cultural differences in general and Māori culture in particular. You will have the ability to analyse and evaluate new information, concepts and evidence from a wide range of sources, and communicate this information in a reasoned and accessible manner. You will be able to pursue careers in language planning, teaching, Māori health and welfare and iwi development.
Evidence of literacy, and an ability to study at the appropriate level. This can be through study, work and/or life experience. CPIT literacy assessments are available.
Or a pass in the CPIT Certificate in Māori Studies L4, Te Ata Hōu or the CPIT Diploma in Māori Studies L5, Te Hāpara.
and12 credits at Level 2 in 'English language focused/literacy' subjects, domains or unit standards (see Entry Criteria).
