You will choose either Māori or Japanese language as your specialisation. This intensive three year degree programme will enable you to develop a high level of proficiency in spoken and written language, as well as the academic skills required for higher level study. It includes compulsory course in your chosen language, as well as linguistics, cultural studies and a supervised research project at level 7. You can choose elective courses offered in the following vocational areas: language teaching, translation and interpreting, business, Māori development, and Maori health and welfare. You may include a maximum of 100 elective credits from any degree programme at CPIT or other New Zealand polytechnics or universities.

Japanese language courses are intended for those whose first language is not Japanese. The Head of School will, in consultation with the relevant language specialist, determine whether you are a first language speaker.
Graduates of this programme will have a high level of proficiency in Māori or Japanese language. Depending on the elective you will be able to pursue a career in teaching, language planning and revitalisation, translation and interpreting, tourism, business, Mādevelopment.
If your specialisation is Māori you will have an understanding of the nature of culture and cultural differences in general and Maori culture in particular. You will have the ability to analyse and evaluate new information, concepts and evidence from a wide range of sources, and communicate this information in a reasoned and accessible manner. You will be able to pursue careers in language planning, teaching, Māori health and welfare, and iwi development. If your specialisation is Japanese you may choose a career in New Zealand or abroad. These careers include teaching, interpreting and translation, and international business. Graduates have been recipients of a number of prestigious scholarships to Japan.
Evidence of literacy, numeracy and an ability to study at the appropriate level. This can be through study, work and/or life experience. CPIT literacy assessments are available.
