Maori Studies

Te Puna Wānaka programmes have been developed to provide study pathways for students which offer multiple entry and exit points to meet individual needs and potential. More specifically programmes have been designed to enable Te Puna Wānaka graduates the ability to join and engage in a number of vocational fields.

Te Puna Wānaka offers the following programmes:

Bachelor of Language (Maori)
Level: 7 - The programme includes compulsory courses in Māori language, linguistics, cultural studies and a supervised research project at Level 7.

Bachelor of Language (with Specialisation)
Level: 7 - You will choose either Māori or Japanese language as your specialisation. This intensive three year degree programme will enable you to develop a high level of proficiency in spoken and written language, as well as the academic skills required for higher level study.

Statement of Attainment - Te Kakano: Te Whanake series 1 and 2
Level: 5 - Te Kakano is a total immersion course based on the Te Whanake Series by Associate Professor John Moorfield (Otago University). Part 1 is based on Chapters 1-5 and Part 2 is based on Chapters 6-10.

Te Ata Hou - Certificate in Maori Studies
Level: 4 - Te Ata Hōu is a one year full-time level 4 programme. You will learn skills necessary for successful academic study while at the same time have the opportunity to gain a strong base in Māori language, customs, history and development. Electives will give you the opportunity to study 30 credits in a discipline of your choice, such as art and design, health and welfare, computing, maths or hospitality.

Te Atatu (Diploma in Maori Studies)
Level: 6 - The programme includes compulsory courses in Māori language, linguistics and cultural studies in the second year of the Bachelor of Language (Māori). In addition to these core subjects, electives are offered in the following vocational areas: Language Teaching; Translation; Māori Development; Health and Welfare. A maximum of 60 elective credits from any diploma or degree programme at CPIT or other New Zealand polytechnic or university may also be included. Credit recognition towards other qualifications (e.g., the internationally recognised Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults, Diploma in Japanese or various business qualifications) is possible through the elective choices.

Te Haeata - Certificate in Maori Studies
Level: 3 - Te Haeata is a six month foundation programme with a Māori studies focus that is designed for those who want to take the first step into further areas of tertiary study. In this programme you will learn about Māori language and customs, and Māori art and design while also learning how to develop skills for further successful tertiary study. Alternatively you may study an elective of your own choice instead of Māori art and design, eg computing skills. You will also have the opportunity to study electives from one of the following areas: Art and Design; Health and Welfare; Computing; Maths; Hospitality.

Te Hapara (Diploma in Maori Studies)
Level: 5 - The programme includes compulsory courses in Māori language, and linguistics and cultural studies which are shared with the Bachelor of Language (Japanese). In addition to these core subjects, electives are offered in the following areas: Māori development; health and welfare. You can also study academic development courses which prepare you for higher level study. A maximum of 30 elective credits from any diploma or degree programme at CPIT or other New Zealand polytechnic or university may also be included.
