With a long term interest in woodwork, Ryan Bonniface decided to sign up for CPIT's Certificate in Joinery so that he could kick start a career working with wood.
Joiners work with specialised machinery to make "built in" articles of furniture such as kitchen and bathroom units, windows, doors, stairs and shop fittings. Furniture makers work in factories making items such as tables, chairs, bookshelves and bedroom units.

Joinery programmes:
During the Level 2 Joinery programme at CPIT, students will gain basic joinery skills in designing and producing the internal architecture or fixed objects of buildings like doors, kitchens and bathrooms. Courses include the use of hand and portable power tools, the selection and use of timber, fixings, adhesives and sealants, and the use and maintenance of machinery. Theory, calculations, and documentation are also covered to give you a well balanced trade qualification.
Advanced joinery skills covered in the level 3 and 4 programmes include the operation and fabrication of cupboards, drawers, doors, the lamination of the bench tops and the operation and adjustment of fixed machinery, windows, doors and stairs.
Furniture Making programmes:
Students in the National Certificate in Furniture Making (Level 2) will spend much of the programme constructing furniture items such as tables, chairs, bedside cabinets. Students can also undertake work experience two days a week, but this is not compulsory.
Advanced skills included in the level 3 and 4 programmes include the operation of various woodworking machines, assembly of furniture, drawing & calculations, the setting of wood machinery, veneering and laminating.
