What are my career options upon completing the Certificate in Hairdressing?

The hairdressing pre trade programme is the right place to start if you want to work
towards becoming a fully qualified hairdresser. On completion of the pre trade
programme, you can start working as an apprentice in a commercial hair salon and
work towards a higher trade certificate to become a fully qualified hairdresser.

Once fully qualified, hairdressing can offer exciting career opportunities including:

  • National & international salon work
  • Manage or own your own salon
  • Styling for events e.g. weddings, balls
  • Styling for fashion, theatre & films
  • Technical or product consultant
  • National & international competitions

What will I study?

Students in the Certificate in Hairdressing (Level 2) will study creative hair design including:

  • setting
  • blow waving & long hair design
  • ladies hair cutting
  • colour & perm design
  • reception & retailing

Students in the Certificate in Hairdressing (Level 4) will enhance their cutting skills with the Pivot Point Men's Hair Sculpture programme; complete the learning for the balance of the unit standards toward their National Certificate in Hairdressing and build on skills and confidence in our commercial salon HIT144.

Where will I study?

Hairdressing programmes are delivered in purpose built facilities at the CPIT City Campus in High Street, Christchurch. Our facilities also include Hit 144, a commercial hair salon where students have the opportunity to work with real clients and gain some excellent practical salon experience.

Students also have access to an extensive range of campus facilities at the nearby Madras St campus including:

  • 24 hour computer access with internet and email for current students
  • CPIT's well-resourced library

  • A health centre offering nursing, medical and counselling services
  • A recreation centre
