No matter what your age, skill or education, we can help you get where you want to be with a range of tailor-made foundation programmes.

These qualifications are designed to help students meet the entry requirements for a further qualification. They can also be chosen by people who are studying for the sheer enjoyment of it and have varied interests.

The CPIT's Foundation programmes are:

  • Certificate in Foundation Studies (Te Haeata Pasifika)
    With Specialisation Option The full year Certificate in Foundation Studies provides you with the opportunity to gain the necessary skills and prerequisite skills to meet the entry criteria of higher level programmes. You can choose courses in English language, academic study skills, introductory business studies, numeracy and computing and other introductory courses in subjects you are interested in.
  • Certificate in Sports Training & Indigenous Culture
    This programme offers an opportunity for Māori, Pasifika and other students who are interested in sport or fitness to gain further physical and mental conditioning. Students will also gain an understanding of Māori language and culture and improved literacy and academic study skills. (A Pasifika language can be taken in place of the Māori language when there is sufficient demand). Content includes introductory anatomy and physiology for athletes, basic principles and application of training and coaching at sub-elite level, fitness assessment, Māori language and culture and preparation for academic study courses.
  • Certificate in Workskills
    This programme emphasises the development of your potential and fulfilment of personal goals. You will gain general skills that will assist in your success in the workforce as well as some skills specific to your work aspirations. There is an optional work experience component.
  • Certificate of Proficiency (Foundation)
    This programme is designed to prepare you for further tertiary study and help you meet the entry requirements for your ‘target qualification’.
  • Te Ata Hou - Certificate in Maori Studies
    Te Ata Hōu is a one year full-time level 4 programme. You will learn skills necessary for successful academic study while at the same time have the opportunity to gain a strong base in Māori language, customs, history and development. Electives will give you the opportunity to study 30 credits in a discipline of your choice, such as art and design, health and welfare, computing, maths or hospitality.
  • Te Haeata - Certificate in Maori Studies
    Te Haeata is a six month foundation programme with a Māori studies focus that is designed for those who want to take the first step into further areas of tertiary study. In this programme you will learn about Māori language and customs, and Māori art and design while also learning how to develop skills for further successful tertiary study. Alternatively you may study an elective of your own choice instead of Māori art and design, eg computing skills. You will also have the opportunity to study electives from one of the following areas: Art and Design; Health and Welfare; Computing; Maths; Hospitality.
Some basic courses in computing, communication and study skills are compulsory for all students unless the student can demonstrate these skills prior to enrolment. Specific pathways have been established in:
