English for Domestic Students

CPIT's programmes of study in English for Domestic Students are:

Certificate in English (Upper Intermediate A)
Level: 5 - This Certificate consists of two core courses in General English. It is designed to develop your English language skills in all areas of communication, reading, writing, speaking and listening.

Certificate in English as an Additional Language
Level: 4 - The Certificate in English as an Additional Language involves intensive language instruction which will enable you to develop English language competence for living, studying and/or working in an English speaking environment.

Certificate in Intensive English
Level: 5 - The Certificate in Intensive English consists of two core courses in General English plus electives which include English language skills development plus vocational courses such as Hospitality and Bridging to Work.

Certificates in English
Level: 1-4 (depends on course selection) - This group of English language programmes covers Beginner to Intermediate levels and are designed to enable you to develop fluency and accuracy in the four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Diploma in English (with Specialisation)
Level: 5 - The Diploma in English (General) includes core English language courses which will enable you to develop language competence for living and/or working in an English speaking environment. The electives include further development of specific English language skills plus vocational courses such as Hospitality and Bridging to Work. The Diploma in English (Academic) includes English language and academic literacy courses which will enable you to develop knowledge and skills for success in tertiary study in English speaking settings. It also includes electives from mainstream programmes at CPIT.

CPIT also offers part time courses including English For Work, Speak Better English, and Individual Learning Programmes.

Study grants

These courses may be free to Permanent Residents with Refugee Status or Academic Migrants. To check your eligibility for a study grant, visit the TEC website, or email info@cpit.ac.nz for further information.

Why should I study English at CPIT?

What are my options upon completing English language study at CPIT?

If you are a migrant or refugee in New Zealand one of the most important requirements for settling into your new life is the English Language.

CPIT’s English language courses are designed to give students the ability to use English confidently in both personal and business settings.

Graduates may choose to continue their English study or move into mainstream programmes at CPIT or other tertiary institutions.

A qualification in English may also increase employment opportunities or help new immigrants to find work in their former professions.

What will I study?

All of CPIT’s English programmes have been designed to extend your abilities in all areas of English communication – listening, speaking, reading & writing – to a level appropriate to your needs.

Where will I study?

CPIT’s School of English is located at the main city campus in Madras St. English students have access to the Language Self Access Centre in the CPIT library where listening booths, computers, video and DVD players are provided to assist students with their language learning. Students also have access to an extensive range of campus facilities including:

  • 24 hour computer access with Internet and email for current students
  • CPIT’s well-resourced library
  • Learning Services
  • Two cafés
  • A health centre offering nursing, medical and counselling services
  • A recreation centre
  • The Christchurch Polytechnic Students Association (CPSA)
