How can I train to be a Registered Electrician?

To become a registered electrician you are required to complete level 2, 3 & 4 electrical engineering programmes, including the required on-job components. On completion you will need to pass the EWRB (Electrical Workers Registration Board) Theory & regulations exams to
gain your registration.

The typical pathways of study are:

1) Complete the Certificate in Pre Trade Electrical Engineering (with Practicum) which covers level 2 and 3 (39 weeks of full time study). Then enter an industry apprenticeship. The benefit of this pathway is that you complete the bulk of your study within one year. You will still need to complete the National Certificate in Electrical Engineering (Electrician for Registration) level 4 part time while working.

2) Complete the Certificate in Pre Trade Electrical Engineering Level 2 (21 weeks of full time study). Then enter an industry apprenticeship. The benefit of this pathway is that you enter the workforce within six months, however you will still need to complete a further two years of study part time to complete the level 2 and 4 programmes.

3) If you are unable to study full time you can complete the Level 2, 3 and 4 programmes part time for a minimum of three years while completing your apprenticeship.

What will I study?

Depending upon the level of training you are undertaking, students will study a range of subjects relevant to the electrical trades such as:

  • Principles of electricity and magnetism
  • Capacitors and semiconductors
  • Testing appliances for safety
  • First aid and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation
  • Simple mathematics and mechanics
  • Simple electrical instruments and measurements
  • Report writing
  • Drawing and interpreting electrical diagrams
  • AC theory
  • Earthing
  • DC power supplies
  • Knowledge of electrical switchboards
  • Electric lighting
  • Three-phase transformers
  • Programmable logic controllers
  • Semi-conductor power devices
  • Theory for registration of electricians

Where will I study?

Electrical trades programmes are delivered at the CPIT Sullivan Avenue Campus in Opawa, Christchurch. Our facilities are purpose built for carpentry training with building barns, specialised workshops and machine shops. Students also have access to other campus facilities
such as:

  • computer suites
  • the library
  • a cafeteria
