CPIT's acclaimed School of Art & Design offers you the opportunity to become a part of a creative hub of design education, teaching you to develop your personal, creative and technical abilities in a wide range of areas.
The CPIT's programmes of study in art & design are:
Bachelor of Design
Level 7 - This is a three-year design programme with specialisations in:
- Applied Visual Art
- Explore, develop and apply your own personal artistic vision in order to define an art and design practice.
- Gain the knowledge and skills of self employment and how to set up your own studio.
- Visual Communication Design
- Learn practical skills and professional attitudes required to set you on a successful path as a graphic designer.
- Develop your skills and knowledge in the areas of design principles, typography, and visual communication using the latest in digital technology.
- Multimedia Design
- Delve into an exciting exploration of new media, including animation, interactivity, 3D design modelling, lighting and lens based media for the screen.
- Gain a broad base of knowledge and skills to equip you for a career as a creative and innovative designer in a challenging and competitive market.
Certificate in Design
Level 4 - This one-year programme is designed to prepare you for further tertiary study in art or design. You will develop an understanding of the creative process through practical art and design skills, while at the same time improving study skills for successful degree level academic study.
Careers in Art & Design
Art and Design courses will teach you to develop your personal creative and technical abilities in a range of areas of design practice. The choices are endless - you could establish a career in New Zealand or overseas. Some examples include:
- ceramic artist, jeweller
- digital animator and designer
- editorial or graphic designer
- gallery or museum professional
- printmaker, sculptor
- television or theatre set designer
- teacher in a related field
How much work will it be?
- These are immersion-style full time programmes. Part time study is possible in the Bachelor of Design, but your studies have to be completed in a limited time frame.
- You will spend about 40 hours each week in practical workshops, lectures and undertaking your own independent research and practise.
- In your first year of study you can expect to spend about 20 hours per week in class, and 15-20 hours in independent study.
Where will I study?
- Most courses are studio-orientated and are based in and around D Block at CPIT's Madras Street Campus.
- You'll have access to specialist facilities, including; computer labs (some equipped with Mac G5s); printmaking studios; and wood, metal, jewellery and ceramics workshops.
- Theory classes are delivered in lectures as well as tutorials.
- In your first year, you will be based in a "homeroom" with 15-20 other students.
