CPIT's programmes of study in Adventure Recreation are:

Bachelor of Adventure Recreation & Outdoor Education
Level: 7 - A three year degree unlike any other in New Zealand. This programme offers you a unique combination of theory and practice that comprises a mixture of core and elective courses. It allows you to gain educational, environmental, instructional and adventure knowledge, skills and practice within a broad understanding of outdoor education. Year One - Level 5 Core - Environmental Science 1, Adventure Tourism, Outdoor Safety Management, Science of Human Performance in the Outdoors, Education Learning & Communication, Expedition, and one elective course Year Two - Level 6 Social Environmental Values, Leadership & Management in Outdoor Recreation Enterprises, Education Planning & Assessment, Contemporary Praxis, Environmental Science 2, and two elective courses Year Three - Level 7 Social Environmental Action, Independent Inquiry in Professional Practice, and four elective courses

Certificate in Adventure Recreation
Level: 4 - This programme gives you a solid foundation to get started in this exhilarating field of adventure leadership. Practicals include sea kayak, raft, whitewater kayak, ski, snowboard, tramp, mountain, rock climb.

Certificate in Ski and Snowboard Instruction
Level: 4 - This programme is delivered by the Snowsports School at the Mt Hutt Ski Area, Methven, Canterbury. Students will gain the skills and knowledge required to teach skiing or snowboarding in the New Zealand Snowsports Alliance (NZSIA) class level system. Opportunities will exist for students to shadow workshops that are being taught to the Snowsport School guests.

Diploma in Recreation Leadership
Level: 5 - This one year programme will expose you to a leadership focused recreation education. You will study a mixture of compulsory and specialist electives.

What are my career options upon completing an Adventure Recreation qualification at CPIT?

Graduates of CPIT's Adventure Recreation programmes can be found in all areas of the Outdoor Education and Adventure Tourism industries in a variety of roles. Our gradautes are qualified to:
  • run fitness programmes in a city;
  • instruct youth in outdoor education programmes;
  • work in the snow sport industry;
  • join an adventure tourist operation;
  • coordinate events;
  • deliver recreation and sports programmes for the community;
  • work in a holiday resort as a Recreation Manager.

CPIT's Adventure Recreation programmes are based at the city campus in Madras St with regular trips out into the wilderness for practical sessions and adventure activities. Students have access to an extensive range of campus facilities including:
