Flats

Many CPIT students live in shared rental accommodation while studying. Sharing rental accommodation (a "flat") with other students is one of the cheapest ways to live. While there are many flats to rent in Christchurch, a good one may be hard to find, especially at the beginning of the academic year. It is easier to obtain a flat if the students are currently in Christchurch. Finding a flat may involve first arranging temporary accommodation with relatives or friends, homestay for international students or initially staying somewhere such as a motel or backpackers.

What to expect

Most flats are unfurnished. They will contain an oven and in some cases a refrigerator and washing machine. Furnished flats are available but rentals are higher.

International students sharing a flat with New Zealanders will develop English skills as well as being independent (international students under 18 must live in homestay accommodation).

Finding a flat

You can find flats in Christchurch by:

  • Looking at copies of the 'To Let' and 'Flatmates' sections of the Christchurch Press, particularly Saturday or Wednesday editions.
  • Checking out the student notice boards outside room S164, Faculty Notice Boards or the Students’ Association.
  • Asking your friends or classmates. Some flats are passed on only by word of mouth.
  • Contacting Real Estate Agents and Rental Agencies listed under Accommodation Rental in the Yellow Pages Telephone Book. They may charge a fee of one week’s rental if they find a flat for you.
  • Looking at flat listings on the internet.

Cost of flatting

The following are examples of the average flatting costs per week (based upon a 3 person share flat):

  • Rent $85-150
  • Electricity $15
  • Phone $5
  • Food $50
  • Appliance Hire $4
