CPIT's trades training programmes offer hands on learning so you gain the skills that are in demand in the trades industry.
The best start for a career in trades is a pre trade programme. On completion of a pre trade programme, you can start working as an apprentice in your chosen trade and work towards a higher trade certificate to become a fully qualified tradesperson.
Automotive Engineering & Autobody
- Certificate in Motor Industry (Entry Skills)
This programme will develop the skills and knowledge needed to begin a career in the Automotive Engineering, Panel Beating, Spray Painting, Coach Building and Automotive Restoration industries. The compulsory section of the qualification covers protection of vehicle electronics, automotive preventative maintenance, automotive machining, automotive administration, automotive electrical, stock security, workshop engineering and welding, and work and study skills.
The elective strands cover a range of motor industry subjects particular to automotive electrical and mechanical occupations and collision repair occupations.
Students will also have to complete a minimum of 160 hours of work experience in the industry.
- National Certificate in Motor Industry (Automotive Body) (Level 3)
This programme will develop the skills and knowledge needed to carry out automotive collision repair and refinishing work in an approved collision repair or refinishing workshop. It is a part time programme completed while you work in the industry.
- National Certificate in Motor Industry (Automotive Electrical and Mechanical Engineering) (Level 3)
This programme will develop the skills and knowledge needed to carry out automotive electrical engineering work in an approved automotive workshop.
- National Certificate in Motor Industry (Automotive Body) (Level 4)
This programme will develop the skills and knowledge needed to carry out automotive collision repair or refinishing work in an approved collision repair or refinishing workshop.
- National Certificate in Motor Industry (Automotive Electrical and Mechanical Engineering) (Level 4)
This programme will develop the skills and knowledge needed to carry out automotive engineering work in an approved automotive workshop.
Carpentry
- Certificate in Carpentry
The main focus of this programme is to provide foundation knowledge and skills in carpentry.
- National Certificate in Carpentry
The National Certificate in Carpentry is a comprehensive workplace based qualification that will provide you with theoretical knowledge supported with four years of workplace experience as a managed apprentice.
- National Certificate in Construction (Leading Hand)
The National Certificate in Construction (Leading Hand) Level 4 is the first level of two qualifications designed to recognise the expertise and responsibility now required for on-site operations in the New Zealand building and construction industry.
- National Certificate in Construction (Supervisor)
This programme is designed to develop the skills and knowledge required of a capable construction supervisor.
Driving and Transport
- Certificate in Road Transport
Incorporating unit standards towards NC1227 National Certificate in Goods Service (Core Skills) with Forklift strand Level 2 and NC1228 National Certificate in Goods Service (Heavy Vehicle Driver) Level 3
This full time 14-week programme will prepare you to begin a career in the road transport or goods service industries. As a holder of this certificate you will have completed the required unit standards for the award of a Land Transport NZ Class 2 Drivers Licence, the operation of a forklift (leading to endorsement F), loading a service vehicle, customer service, safe driving, knowledge of driving law and related hazard/risk assessment procedures. Your Class 2 licence and F endorsement will be issued by the LTSA or their agent when you produce a certificate (issued at CPIT) confirming a pass in the required unit standards.
- Certificate in Heavy Vehicle Driving
If you are already working (or intending to work) in the road transport industry and need a Class 4 or Class 5 Driver Licence in order to drive goods service vehicles, this part time programme will help you to achieve those goals.
- Certificate in Distribution
The CPIT Certificate in Distribution is a self paced programme, with a combination of study and work-based training, designed particularly for those with some experience in the distribution, warehousing or freight forwarding environment.

Plastics & Polymer
- National Certificate in Plastics Processing Technology
The National Certificate in Plastics Processing Technology Level 1 (with strands in Injection Moulding, Extrusion, Blow Moulding, Thermoforming, Blown Film Extrusion, Film Conversion, Injection Stretch Blow Moulding, and Rotational Moulding) is an introductory qualification to the plastics industry, and provides you with limited skills and knowledge in one specialised production technique (strand).
Plumbing, Gasfitting & Drainlaying
- Certificate in Pre Trade Plumbing, Gasfitting and Drainlaying
The Certificate in Pre Trade Plumbing, Gasfitting and Drainlaying covers the fundamental skills you will need to gain employment as an apprentice within one or more of these related three trade areas.
- National Certificate in Drainlaying
As a holder of this qualification, you will be able to select, use and maintain drainlaying hand and power tools and trade equipment; excavate and trench; install and maintain drainlaying systems and structures; establish levels and gradients using laser equipment; and perform maintenance on drainage systems. This qualification forms part of the requirements for registered drainlayers.
- National Certificate in Plumbing
Delivered concurrently with the National Certificate in Gasfitting Level 4
As a holder of this qualification, you will be able to use and maintain plumbing hand tools and trade equipment; install, secure and maintain domestic and commercial plumbing systems, appliances, fittings and structures; excavate and trench; remove asbestos products; solder metal joints and apply sealants to joints; join lead sheet and tube by lead burning; design and construct sheet metal plumbing requirements; weld steel plumbing pipe and sheet; and design and fabricate sheet lead and tube plumbing items. This qualification forms part of the requirements for a registered plumber.
- Craftsman Gasfitting
This programme prepares Registered Plumbers and Gasfitters to sit the Craftsman Gasfitting Examination, conducted by the Plumbers Gasfitters and Drainlayers Registration Board.
- Craftsman Plumbing
This programme prepares Registered Plumbers and Gasfitters to sit the Plumbing Craftsman Examination, conducted by the Plumbers Gasfitters and Drainlayers Registration Board.
- Craftsman Common
This programme prepares Registered Plumbers and Gasfitters to sit the Craftsman Common Examination, conducted by the Plumbers Gasfitters and Drainlayers Registration Board.

This programme will develop the skills and knowledge you need to begin a career in the Engineering Fabrication industry.
