Having secured a job as a Human Resources Coordinator without a relevant qualification, Kirsty Fitzgerald felt it was wise to get one so enrolled part time in CPIT's NZ Diploma in Business.

"My boss had recruited me based on my attitude and fit with the company but I felt that if I wanted to progress my career or move roles at any point in the future, it would make sense to have a well recognised qualification behind me.

I had done other part time papers at CPIT and liked the learning environment and the people there so decided to check out their NZ Diploma in Business. I could specialise in Human Resources Management as well as cover the general business topics so I thought it was the most appropriate programme for me.

The course content was really up to date and so relevant that I was often learning something at CPIT and seeing it applied at my work the next day. The information was also presented in a variety of ways -lectures, videos, group work - so that we continued to be motivated which is a major challenge when you are working all day and then going to class in the evening.

The tutors at CPIT really know what they are talking about - particularly as a number of them are working during the day in the industry and then tutoring at night. I felt that everything I learnt could be applied to a real life work situation and for someone like me who was already working in HR, it gave me more background knowledge and understanding about why we follow certain HR practices at work.

I am still working in my original role as an HR Coordinator for City Care but now have formal recognition of my HR experience which is great. My role involves managing recruitment and staff appraisals for the company's depots nationwide, running monthly retention reports, carrying out staff surveys and managing the company's intranet.

The NZ Diploma in Business has prepared me really well for any future career moves I make in the business world. I would feel confident telling any future employer about it as it's such a meaningful qualification."
