Having worked in interior design in Korea, Grace Choi decided to pursue a creative career of a different sort when she came to New Zealand. "I chose to study hairdressing at CPIT because I wanted to learn a skill that would make it easy to get a job wherever I went. I also wanted a career that would allow me to meet new people," says Grace.
"I tried another hairdressing course first but wasn't sure about the quality of it. When I went to CPIT I felt confident they would teach me what I needed to become a professional hairstylist.
"The tutors on the course were very encouraging and willing to listen to students. They tried to understand every single person's abilities and work with them to develop these," says Grace.
After completing her course, Grace got a job at Eliza Blues hairstylists at the Bush Inn Centre, having been recommended to the owner by one of her tutors.
"I think the owner was aware of the quality of the course at CPIT and could be sure I had the skills she needed."
"I hope to own a salon myself one day. I'd want my customers to enjoy coming to the salon and to make it the top salon in New Zealand. I'd also like to give new stylists the opportunity to work and learn at the salon, and to contribute to helping them get their careers started.
"As well as completing your training you have to have a gift for hairdressing and enjoy working with people. To really be a professional you need to work hard and practice your skills and always be trying to improve.
