Are you in the Zone?

The Zone (Sport Science & Wellness Centre), situated at CPIT’s main campus on Madras Street, has been established to provide testing and assessment services for elite and recreational athletes, clinical populations, and those who are interested in their overall fitness, health and wellness status.

The new facility is run by highly trained and experienced CPIT staff and, in addition to its overall purpose, has also been designed to support the institute’s Bachelor of Applied Science degree covering Sports and Exercise Science and Physical Activity, Health and Wellness specialisations.

The Director of The Zone, Dr Jerry Shearman, says that centres such as these contribute to the development of the sports science industry in New Zealand. “In the past I’ve worked in several of centres throughout New Zealand, Australia and in the U.K. and I’m still astonished at the breadth of clients we see and what they get out of it.”

Dr Shearman has seen some of the best sports people benefit from utilising centres like The Zone from Olympic athletes and premiership footballers to world-class performers. “At these levels, very small improvements in performance can mean the difference between a gold medal and a 4th place - just ask the Evers-Swindells! And now we want to offer these services right here in Canterbury.”

Equally important is the value of these facilities to the general public. “You don’t have to be a top sportsperson to use these facilities,” says Dr Shearman. “In fact, we have a very strong focus on health and wellness. For instance, we can design an assessment or training programme for people on a weight loss programme, or to monitor progress after illness.”

Dr Shearman says The Zone offers a bespoke service and can tailor a programme of training or testing for anyone. “We have sophisticated equipment that can measure your oxygen consumption, measure forces, video and analysis progress, not forgetting the good old stopwatch and clip board!”

The Zoneis now open for business and appointments can be made by calling (03) 940 7576 or emailing thezone@cpit.ac.nz. For more information see www.cpit.ac.nz/thezone
