The Shortlisting Process

All applications will be acknowledged by email as soon as possible following the closing date. The shortlisting panel will then consider all applications. Candidates should allow two weeks from the closing date as a minimum for this process to be completed. Candidates selected for interview will be contacted by phone. Those who are not shortlisted for interview will be notified by email. Please note that it is not CPIT policy to give feedback to candidates who are not shortlisted at this stage of the process.

At the Interview

The interview panel is made up of the appointing manager and between one and four people knowledgeable about the skills required for the position. Shortlisted candidates are given information about the panel at the time that the interview is arranged. Candidates outside New Zealand may be initially interviewed by conference call. If appropriate a visit to CPIT may also be arranged.

CPIT uses a style of interviewing that is interactive and behaviourally based. Each panel member has a question or area of questions which will be asked of candidates. The questions will focus on your past experiences in the key areas defined in the Role Description. Behavioural interviewing focuses on your past behaviour in actual work or other relevant situations. You should be prepared to discuss examples of your experience which demonstrate how well you match the work to be undertaken. Panel members will take notes throughout the interview.

Interviews also give candidates the opportunity to find out more about the day to day aspects of the position. Candidates who are interviewed in person are welcome to bring whanau or a support group to the interview. Please advise the person who arranges the interview if you intend to do this.

Work Samples

For academic positions we may ask candidates to prepare and present a teaching session based on the area of expertise required for the position. Full details of what is required will be given at the time the interview is arranged.

For general staff positions the interview process will normally include a practical exercise based on the duties of the role as outlined in the job description.

For management positions a presentation on a relevant management topic is generally required. The presentation audience will usually comprise a range of staff and the interview panel. Full details of what is required and who will attend will be given at the time the interview is arranged.

Psychometric Testing

We use psychometric testing for most management positions. The tools to be used are determined by the level of the position. When a candidate is selected to undertake testing information about the specific test/s will be provided.

Following Completion of the Selection Tools

Once interviews and other selection tools are completed, the selection panel will convene and the successful candidate will be selected. It is at this stage that we normally do reference checks however, reference checks may be undertaken before interviewing. Provided there are no issues as a result of those checks the candidate will be telephoned by a Human Resources Advisor and offered the role. A formal offer of appointment will then be made in writing.

All unsuccessful candidates who have been interviewed are advised by e-mail and in writing after the appointment has been confirmed. Unsuccessful candidates are welcome to request feedback following their interview. We ask candidates to allow up to two weeks for a final decision; however we aim to contact people as soon as possible following their interview.

Timeframe

The selection process can take anywhere from three weeks to two months after the application closing date. Where there will be unforeseen delays we make contact with candidates to advise in writing on progress at each step of the process. If a candidate has any concerns about the duration of the process then contact should be made with Human Resources staff.

We will be happy to help with any questions related to the timeframes, processes or the different tools used so please call us on 940 8623 or email hr@cpit.ac.nz.
