About counselling

Counsellors help people to deal with their feelings and responses, and decide on actions they can take to solve problems. They work in a variety of settings from community to statutory agencies, with all age groups and communities.

Counsellors may do some or all of the following:

  • listen, respond to, and reflect with clients;
  • help clients understand themselves, their needs and how to meet them;
  • discuss changes that clients could make, and the consequences of those changes;
  • support clients in making decisions;
  • refer clients to specialists;
  • research and read about areas of interest or concern; and
  • run workshops and courses for clients.

Studying counselling

The Diploma in Counselling is not being offered in 2012.

The Diploma in Counselling provides a strong foundation in person-centred counselling. It prepares students to enter the world of social work with both an understanding of the specific needs of people seeking help and the ability to respond appropriately.

You will learn how to communicate effectively, offer problem solving tools and record your clients’ progress. You will be taught how to respect client vulnerability through combining your natural compassion, empathy and ethical practice, with professionalism and a solid grounding in current research and cooperation with other health professionals.
