About animal science
Studies in animal science can open the door to many interesting and varied fields of work in veterinary nursing and animal care: working with domestic, farm, wildlife park and zoo animals.
Students who study an animal science qualification can find themselves at the forefront of all aspects of professional animal care. You will develop the skills and attitudes of best practice veterinary nursing including new-born care, hygiene, anatomy, nutrition, drug dispensing, diagnostic X-rays and clinic reception.
Graduates of the National Certificate in Veterinary Nursing will have the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to work as a veterinary nurse or in occupations involving the care of animals in locations such as a zoo, wildlife park, research establishment or animal breeding/boarding facility.
Studying animal science
At CPIT there is a strong focus on applied learning. Students in the animal science programmes will complete a mix of theoretical and practical training and subjects will include: animal management, animal science, animal care, animal anatomy, animal husbandry, emergency care, surgical training, clinical training and communication.
Our tutors are fully qualified veterinary nurses or vets with impressive industry relationships in Christchurch and nationwide. The President of the NZ Veterinary Nurses Association, the Chair of the Animal Science and Technology Board (a standing subcommittee of the NZ Veterinary Association) and renowned dog behaviour expert Nicole Eltringham-Young are all CPIT staff. We work closely with veterinary clinics in Christchurch who come to us to recruit interns and graduates.
