Getting to know your digital compact camera

This course will examine all the features packed into a digital camera and how to get the best out of them using the extensive modes and menus they contain. Topics such as resolution, compression and quality will be covered in simple easy to understand language. Downloading files, handling files on a computer and travelling with digital cameras will be explained. Instruction on composition, getting the best from a zoom lens, light and creating an image with impact will also be covered.

Become familiar with the features of your single lens reflex (SLR) digital camera and extend your image making ability. Learn how to choose the appropriate features for specific situations to create images with impact. Investigate digital tools such as the use of a histogram in digital photography, use basic colour management skills and understand the advantages and disadvantages of different file formats.


Introduction to available light portraiture

The course will cover different aspects of portraiture photography; from candid to formally posed. The first day will concentrate on portraiture using the available light. The second day will explore the use of additional light sources - portraiture styles, focal length and camera settings, composition and framing, posing, using the light and reflectors, fill-in flash, using household lights. Students will develop skills in working with a model and in composing an effective portrait. Suitable for all camera types .


Introduction to Studio Lighting for Portraits

The course will cover different features of studio portraiture, including designing effective lighting set-ups and preparing your camera to ensure technically proficient results which are aesthetically pleasing. Topics covered include: studio portrait styles , focal length and camera settings for flash, composition, backgrounds and posing, introduction to a studio flash head and a flash meter , lighting with more than one flash and creative lighting in the studio.
