Content & Learning

This programme focuses on interpreting practice in the language laboratory and in the classroom and in developing a full understanding of the various contexts in which interpreting takes place in New Zealand.  You will work closely with English source texts, however, you are also encouraged to consult with speakers of your mother tongue to perfect your language comprehension and interpretation.

What do I need to know?

As the programme includes English language development it is not suitable for native speakers of English. English language proficiency is tested on application to the programme.

Career & Further Opportunities

While full time work as an interpreter is rare in New Zealand, this qualification will be an asset in seeking employment in a range of community settings. These include social services, hospitals, schools, immigration, police and tenancy services.

Interview to provide evidence of personal attributes required for a successful career in interpreting as follows: ability to relate to others both individually and in a group, and effective oral communication skills.

If English is not your first language you are also required to provide evidence of your English language skills as listed below. Refer also to the Acceptable Alternatives Chart which includes credits in English-rich subjects from New Zealand educational institutions.
