It is our ambition to provide a safe environment for all who attend our campuses including our contractors and their staff; we expect you to share this objective with us.

To that end, all contractors must be familiar with our general health and safety information prior to commencing work at CPIT. Specific health and safety information relating to hot work, confined space work, work at heights, work in laboratories, or work involving asbestos will be provided as necessary by the CPIT staff member initiating the work.

Confirmation of understanding

Prior to starting work at CPIT, you will be requested to provide evidence of your commitment to the Health and Safety of your staff and those affected by their work.

Please read through the following information and become familiar with our procedures and expectations. Consider how they can be applied in your particular circumstances and actively engage in their application.

Permits

Hot work permitPermits must be obtained from the CPIT Property Supervisor prior to commencing any of the following work:-

  • Hot work
  • Work involving the isolation of fire detection or protection systems
  • Work at Heights, ie where there is potential to fall 3m or more
  • Confined spaces
  • Work in laboratories
  • Work involving the possible disturbance of asbestos

First aid facilities

Contractors are required to provide their own first aid facilities, and make provision for appropriate first aid response. Should additional assistance be required:-

First aid kits/cabinets are located throughout CPIT campuses. Further assistance can be obtained in an emergency by calling our emergency operator on internal extension 9999. Satellite campuses call 03 649 080.

CPIT’s commitment to contractors Health and SafetyThe Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, and other related legislation and regulations.

In meeting these requirements, we seek to:

  1. Ensure that contractors and subcontractors work in a healthy and safe manner, and are not harmed while at work on CPIT premises.
  2. Ensure that harm is not caused to any other person while contractors and subcontractors are working on CPIT premises.
  3. Promote measures to prevent injury and illness by establishing and insisting upon safe methods, safe equipment, proper materials and safe practices at all times.
  4. Protect the CPIT assets by the implementation of appropriate good work practice.
  5. Develop a list of preferred contractors who meet or exceed the CPIT health and safety requirements.

CPIT values its employees and students and is committed to protecting them from injury/illness. The Institution is also committed to protecting visitors to the campus from injury, and to protecting property from damage due to unsafe practices. We endeavour to seek continuous improvement in its health and safety practices. A safe and healthy work environment is achieved through the co-operation of every employee/student/visitor to comply with all relevant good work standards, Polytechnic procedures and statutory obligations.

By accepting work at CPIT, Contractors agree to share this commitment.

Legal and good work practice compliance

1.1 The staff member of the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology (CPIT) (contract supervisor) who engaged the contractor shall provide any relevant health and safety information relating to work the Contractor is required to do. This includes informing the Contractor of any potential or existing hazards, together with relevant information relating to security, access requirements, work permit and emergency procedures.

1.2 If any deviations from safe work practices are identified, the Contract Supervisor reserves the right to stop all site work until agreed safe work practices are developed.

Smoke free area

Everyone is entitled to a smoke free environment in all indoor areas used for study, work or relaxation. Smoking is forbidden in any CPIT building or vehicle.

In the interest of maintaining a smoke free environment, smokers are requested to refrain from smoking within six metres of any CPIT building.

Accident and incident reporting

A timely and accurate accident report must be completed for any accidents and injuries involving staff, CPIT staff, students and visitors.

Report forms are available from the Health and Safety Manager, Coordinator or online.

Please forward a copy of the report to the CPIT Health and Safety Manager for action and addition to our records database by HR Staff.

Fire safety

When you are working or studying in an area please familiarise yourself with:

  • The nearest fire alarm, the position of fire extinguishers and hose reels in the building.
  • Have a close look at the equipment and familiarise yourself with how to use it.
  • Keep all exit ways clear at all times.
  • Ensure that smoke stop doors are kept closed and never wedged open.
  • Follow the Building Warden’s instructions (will be wearing a high-vis jacket).
  • Detail any hazards the Emergency Services may face, such as dangerous goods or chemicals.
